There is always one brick missing in the wall... Explanation: In fact, I think a literary translation is not bad since you must never change a tradition in the Officers'mess in the Navy. Every membre has his own private life, protected by the "wall", but the midship has no right to a private life! (Same thing for the "aspirants" in the French Army). So, the "missing brick" is the one supposed to protext the midshipman's private life to which he has no right (tradition)! |
