neutral Gordon Matthews : Please see my comment on Michael Martin's answer re use of the word "mankind". I try to be mindful of the use of non-sexist language.

If it makes you feel happier, one could use 'humankind', but in this instance I don't feel that 'mankind' is in any way discriminating.

reminding humanity to contemplate the attentiveness and responsibility of their deeds

Teaching humanity to...
...so humanity remembers to act with attentiveness and responsibility
Peer comment(s):

neutral Gordon Matthews : The key word is "to contemplate". My direct answer/translation would be "to learn to contemplate something". And I would use the word "actions" in preference to "deeds", which sounds old-fashioned to me.

come to their senses and learn to

"...so that the world will come to its senses/ mankind may come to their senses and learn to engage in responsible and respectful stewardship."

Or simply:
"giving mankind an incentive to engage in responsible and respectful stewardship"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Gordon Matthews : I banned "mankind" from my vocabulary long ago. "humankind" and "humanity" are perfectly acceptable alternatives. "mankind" excludes half of humankind.

That's great. I'd be more than happy to replace mankind with humankind but that can hardly be the clincher here. There are other linguistic aspects to this query that I am far more interested in.

learn to pay attention to something

The whole phrase would then read: "so that humankind might learn to pay attention to the mindfulness and responsibility of their actions."
"to consider" or "to contemplate" would be alternative translations of "sich besinnen", but I think "to pay attention to" works best in this case.

neutral Lancashireman : I was looking for the Gordon Matthews neutral here, but then saw who had posted the answer.
