Archaeology
German term or phrase: Stoßeisen
Ein Versuch, eine Beilklinge auf einem geraden langen Holzstiel zu schäften, um sie so als Stoßeisen zu verwenden war nicht befriedigend

I know the tool looks something like this http://www.hyland.de/stosseisen-mit-stiel but I can't think of/find the English word for it.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Stephen, it was a kind of a chisel but thanks to your comment, I checked various chisels and it's actually a 'slick' I was looking for http://www.timbertools.com/Products/Hand-Tools/Slicks.html

disagree  Kim Metzger: Hi Stephen - the tool shown by the asker seems to be a gardening tool, a kind of spade. But since he has a timber framing tool in mind, it would be a slick.
