German term or phrase: denkmalfachlich
As part of a Denkmalauswertung, buildings in the region are divided into four categories, the first of which is "Denkmalfachlich gelungene neue Nutzung".

It may be the late hour but I'm a bit stuck trying to think of a similarly succinct way of wording this. Successful from a professional preservation perspective? Any suggestions for someting a little more elegant?

English translation:adaptive reuse...
Explanation:
... of heritage/historic buildings

"What is adaptive reuse?

Adaptive reuse refers to the modification of a heritage place to a new use that conserves its heritage values. This may involve the introduction of a new service, a new use, or changes to protect a heritage item. Preservation is typically a time consuming and expensive process it is generally reserved for the most historically significant buildings. Adaptive reuse is a more affordable alternative to restoration which preserves some of the building’s historical elements while converting many of its functions to accommodate modern users."

The -fachlich suffix is used here only to convert the noun 'Denkmal' into an adjective. It should not be interpreted literally as 'Fach' (professional, expert, specialist). The more common way of doing this is to add the suffix -technisch.

The responses indicated that there are circumstances when allowing new development is sometimes necessary for the successful conversion of listed buildings.

Notes to answerer
Asker: I like this--but I'm wondering if using this term obfuscates the distinction between 1) and 2). But thinking about it now, I've started to confuse myself about the difference between the two...
