curved sides Explanation: My feeling is that cups are more often described - at least in everyday speech - as having "sides" rather than "walls" Designed in a relatively deep shape for the enjoyment of frothy cappuccino, this seven-ounce Gourmet Collection cup features smoothly curved sides and an angular handle. http://www.amazon.com/Rosenthal-Gourmet-Collection-Cappuccin... |

curved walls Explanation: Four-sided jar with curved walls, shaped corners and four feet. Each side is hand-painted with a floral pattern in purple, pink, green, and yellow underglaze, outlined in black and accented with dots of gilt. The four-sided lid has four heart-shaped pierced openings and a flower-shaped finial. It is hand-painted with flowers in pink and green underglaze, outlined in black. The feet, corner ornaments, rim, and finial are all gilded. http://content.wisconsinhistory.org/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CIS... High ring foot supports the light, deeply curved walls of this broad-mouthed bowl, lip straight and unglazed, walls marked with five raised character Fu (prosperity), in underglaze blue block script, base with four character seal script mark. http://www.cultural-china.com/chinaWH/html/en/31Arts701.html -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-09-08 17:24:38 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Have been trying to post this for ages - problems with the internet? A private Japanese collection housed the Yuan Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain charger that is Lot 203. The masterfully painted platter has a palm-like plant at its center surrounded with fruit, squash and blossoms on vines. Lotus blossoms encircle all. A diaper pattern band at the rim adds even more finesse. Almost 16 inches in diameter, the 14th Century charger is an impressive addition to any collection at about $70,000. Other porcelains and pottery in the sale include a rare Yuan Dynasty underglaze decorated yuhu, Lot 201, expected to fetch upwards of $25,000, and a fine Yuan blue and white bowl, Lot 202, expected to command around $20,000. In a category of its own is the Tang Dynasty Libation cup, Lot 203, carved of white marble. Extremely rare and finely rendered with thin walls and a snarling dragon snout, the 5-inch tall gem carries a catalog estimate of $25,000. Both Chinese and Japanese tradition favor ivory carvings and nowhere is there more variety than in this auction. http://www.newswiretoday.com/news/53133/ This is the technical term and thus fits the tenor of your text. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 189 days (2010-03-17 13:55:24 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I have since discovered that Wandung is very often also translated as 'body' in such a context, so thought I'd just add that in here. A beaker decorated with a falconer colourless glass, of oval, conical form with cut facets, the body decorated with a painted sylvan landscape with resting stag, medallion with falconer, hunting horn, hound and falcon, in the background buildings and clouded sky, Schwarzlot painting heightened with gilt, the base with cut décor, Height: 7,8 cm , chip to the rim, Silesia or Bohemia, painted décor presumably by Ignatius Preissler circa 1730 Becher mit Falkner Glas, farblos, ovale konische Wandung mit Facettenschliffen, umlaufend gemalte Waldlandschaft mit ruhendem Hirsch, Medaillon mit Falkner, Jagdhorn, Hund und Falke in der Linken, im Hintergrund, Häuser und Wolkenhimmel, an Schwarzlotmalerei mit Goldhöhungen, Stand mit Oliven- und Rillenschliff, Höhe 7,8 cm , Lippe mit bestoßener Stelle, Schlesien oder Böhmen, vermutlich Bemalung von Ignatius Preissler um 1730 http://www.dorotheum.com/auktion-detail/auktion_antiquitaete... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 189 days (2010-03-17 13:56:53 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- http://www.dorotheum.com/en/auktion-detail/auktion/antiquita... |
