German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / restoration
German term or phrase: kunsttechnologisch
From a text on an art restoration (sculptures) project proposal (Switzerland):

"Im ersten Abschnitt (des Projektes) gilt es, sich ein umfassendes *kunsttechnologisches* und zustandstechnisches Bild der vorliegenden Objekte zu machen. Die kunsttechnologische Forschung ... "

All I know is that 'art technological' is not what I'm looking for here! Any help greatly appreciated.

English translation:artistic technique and materials ('and context')
Explanation:
Would try a partial re-write along the lines of:

The main goal in the first phase (of the project) will be to obtain comprehensive insight into //knowledge of*** the objects in question, in terms both of artistic technique, materials [could add: 'and context', but original elides this; cf. info at szakkriszta's ref.-URLs ] and of the works' state of conservation. (***: or why not literally, 'a full picture of'...)

I think you've got the meaning exactly.. I was hoping for a more concise solution but maybe there isn't one. 'Art technology' seems to be an accepted term - well, a few US universities use it - but I failed to find an adjectival ref. to the conecpt.. anyway, many thanks!

assessment of the type of art

Explanation:
Ein Vorschlag: Vielleicht koennte man den mittleren Teil des Satzes mit "comprehensive assessment of both the type of art (or type of sculpture) and its condition" umschreiben.

neutral  Titus Haennni: I think in that case we are missing the "-technologie" part, which seems important in the context of restoration
6 mins
-> That's true - I take your point. I just thought he wanted to avoid the 'technology' bit in the first sentence and thought that 'comprehensive assessment' might sound 'technical' enough.
