agree  Michael Wetzel: comprehensive DE concept seems almost non-existent in EN: individuals or categories seem to usually be specifically named, but these are the right terms in EN ... if only one figure, probably better to omit and describe (e.g. "the mourning M.")

Assistenzfigur (Malerei): „(da)beistehen“, „helfen“. Bezeichnung für in der Malerei und der Plastik dargestellte Nebenfiguren (Beifiguren), die dem eigentlichen Thema nur assistieren (beistehen). Bisweilen findet man z. B. den ausführenden Künstler oder den Stifter dargestellt (Stifterbildnis). Auch die am Fuße von Kruzifixen trauernd wiedergegebenen Personen, Maria, der Jünger Johannes und manchmal Maria Magdalena, werden Assistenzfigur genannt; ebenso die Jesus und Maria begleitenden Erzengel, die vor allem auf alten Wandmalereien oder Mosaiken in Apsiden (Apsis) zu finden sind.
