"Heute weiß ich, dass man die Holz- oder Farbbröckchen Schollen nennt. Der Restaurator, der mir die Sache erklärte, sagte, manchmal sei es so, dass die Schollen einfach nicht hielten."

Is there a set technical term used by Anglophone restorers for the loose specks or splinters that can come free of an Old Master carving?

It's the obvious solution, really, isn't it? What struck me about "Schollen" is that it is such an odd word choice, in context, and obviously Fachsprache. If Anglophone practitioners have no equivalently odd word in the work they do, then I'm sure "flakes" will stand.

I did not have much luck in finding German references, where "Scholle" was used in a pure *wood* restoration context. Somehow I have the impression that it is much more used in the context of paint, plaster or other "non-wood" damage where layers come off in flakes, i.e. flat pieces.

Scholle is the lump of earth turned over as the plow cuts through the soil. It may then, on the small scale denote the material that a carving tool cuts loose?
