"Das Relief verbindet eine (einansichtige) Flächenordnung mit plastischen Elementen, die insbesondere durch den von der Bewegung der Betrachter(innen) abhängigen Schattenwurf eine zusätzliche Ebene des Räumlichen hinzufügen."

The context is again the analysis of Duchamp's "Rotoreliefs" and their placement between two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional sculpture.

Asker: My problem is the second term and how to connect the two - could one say "planar order" or "planar arrangement"??? Because of course the question is the "Anordnung auf der Fläche" (I think). so I'm not sure at all whether just the term "plane" will suffice.

Asker: Yes, of course Helen is correct with her explanation and so is your literal version. But how to incorporate this then into this 'heavy' sentence! Could I say: "Therefore, a media-aesthetic analysis of the relief would have to resolve the question how the logic of the shadow (which is dependent on the movement of the viewer and/or the source of light) is related to the planometric logic of the arrangement of the planes." Or could I just use "planar order" instead?

agree  Helen Shiner: I am agreeing with your more literal version, because I think it is needed: arrangement or ordering of planes. Relief sculpture may have a variety of layers or levels or intersections of flat planes and it is this ordering that it being described here.
