German term or phrase: (Bild)formationen
This appears in a passage about the art of the 1960s, relating to Robert Indiana. The terms "Formationen" and "Bildformationen" occur throughout the text. Is there any difference between the two? I don't believe formations is correct here, but would shapes be appropriate? Any help would be gratefully received.

A few examples:

agree  Wendy Streitparth: I'd go with compositions

  -> Thank you, Wendy!

neutral  Helen Shiner: Not specific enough in this abstract context./you need to ask yourself why the author/artist chose this word rather than the more prosaic 'composition'. This is not vague at all.
4 hrs
-> To be honest - I thought 'non specific' might actually be an advantage in this context.

agree  philgoddard: I rarely disagree with Helen, but I think "compositions" is exactly right.

neutral  Stephen Reader: Not t'be facetious - (@ Helen), I have the impression Ger. art theorists dislike 'composition'... Here Form'n seems to dble as a shape, focus on its becoming, & a *composite*, perhaps this an alternative to c.-tion? If not 1:1 'formation' for the 2nd?

-> I don't think there is a 1:1. But why don't you suggest it as an answer?

configuration/serial painting

Explanation:
when googling images: Robert Indiana, you see "configurations"

"Bildformationen" are somewhat interlinked paintings:

agree  Helen Shiner: With 'configuration' ('visual configuration' for 'Bildformation') but not 'serial painting' as a translation here.

Let go of 'formation/s' in many cases/reperceive. 1 e.g.: composite

Explanation:
Formation (D) seems much more malleable (to coin a phr.) than f-n in E.- I 'expand' in Discussion Entry. Consider verbally-tinged (past-process-recalling noun function). Pending reading of lit. on Indiana in E & other langs. May envisage a) a shape (momentary syn.: Form) ...as product of mental &/or manual process (syn.: Formung, eine - ); b) a composite (the whole thesaurus of terms invoking ordering, systematising, gathering.... also through time) - constellation, grouping, syntax, grammar, choreography, aligning, -ment, etc. (n/least, with freekfluweel & Helen). Thx to Usch for the prompt.
