So this is part of some text for an art calendar. It refers to the artist Schmidt-Rottluff. The term Flächenmalerei refers to the painting of large expanses of an image with a single colour, as far as I understand it. Any ideas as to how I can convey this succinctly? Is there a handy artists' term?
Here is a link to an image of the painting:

Thanks for any help.

English translation:broad swathes of colour
Explanation:
"... with intense, rhythmic, broad swathes of colour on canvas and paper."

Another way to describe his painting style.

I have no idea if there is a specific succinct term for this (but I'm sure Helen would know).

broad-brush technique

Explanation:
Schmidt-Rottluff is so well-represented here that you might erroneously conclude he was the movement's leading light. His religious woodcuts are angular and severe, qualities absent from engravings such as ''Two Women'' (1924) and ''Woman at the Edge of the Woods'' (1920), both of which are characterized by simple but graceful lines. His 1935 watercolor portraits of himself and Hanna Bekker manifest a restraint at odds with his broad-brush technique.

neutral  Eleanore Strauss: the broad-brush technique generally refers to just that...the technique. Which is not always applied when there are large expanses of color...think roller etc.

agree  Stephen Reader: PS (as you've made your choice, Sonja) - I can't think of a specific term, tho' Flächenmalerei sounds like one (we're certainly not talking "colour field painting" - anonymous flat fields). Broad swathes of, painting in broad areas of colour, etc.

-> Thanks, Stephen. Good to hear from someone who knows a thing or two about art.

agree  Eleanore Strauss: as someone with a degree in art and art history this seems appropriate... I just stumbled over the (for me) unusual spelling of swaths... Also referred to as broad or flat swatches or even expanses of color.

painting style characterized by flat areas

Explanation:
Das ist natürlich nur eine Umschreibung, die sich aber so oder ähnlich recht häufig findet.

"He initially painted in an Impressionist style, but his painting Windy Day (1907) shows the artist’s transition to his mature style, which is characterized by flat areas of boldly dissonant colours."

Zitiert nach: http://www.britannica.com/biography/Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff

"Schmidt-Rottluff was strongly influenced by the colorful palettes of van Gogh and Matisse, and though he began his career defining structure with the careful juxtaposition of flat areas of color, by the early 1920s he was using strong, simple lines to create form."
