Asker: Thanks for your input. The reference you sent is for an internal combustion engine rather than a hydraulic cylinder, so I don't see the direct application to my question. Maybe I'm just missing it. I like "on the side of," though. However, I think this is a back-translation, so I am now considering a completely literal translation here: "annulus-side" and "cylinder-side." Do you think that's good idea?
