According to this, "Ausbauten" are actually conversions (the first link I posted here did not focus on RVs to begin with):

Pictures are really deceiving in this case: The "Ausbau" is an "Umbau," which will affect the inside of the vehicle, but it's not the main point. You'll see that if you take a close look at the text underneath these photos:

It's always about some bus, van or similar vehicle being turned into an RV.

"Aufbauten" are what Australians call "slide-on campers" or "demountable campers" in the UK, I guess:

The comment was not directed at you but any non-native speakers who might be reading this page.
The EN word 'body' is an inadequate counterpart to the elegant DE noun 'Karosserie'. I have just completed a major project on the Trabant and winced inwardly every time I had to refer to 'bodies' and 'chassis' (which is both singular and plural in EN.
I am similarly embarrassed by the inadequacy of 'building' (The builders built a big building). Thank goodness for 'construction', which may be a solution here:

I know it does - in fact, "Bodybuilding" as an anglicism in the sense of building up muscles is the only accepted meaning in German. I've just come across the term before and it's really all over the place, from the UK to Australia to South Africa:

I think the EN word 'body' in an automotive concept looks plain weird. And when combined with 'building', it has an alternative meaning which causes potential confusion.

Cilian's answer from some years ago is the only usable one from the glossary, in my opinion, but the question was about Aufbauten and Anbauten.

I'm leaning towards your option, but would like to ask you what you think about "body building"? E.,g.:
