German term or phrase: durchtauschen
Hi guys,

Wondering whether you could help me with the verb "durchtauschen". It appears in the following sentence of a project I'm currently translating (Porsche 911R):

"Dort tauschen dann die hochrangigen Führungspersonen die Cayennes, Macans, Boxters, Panameras unter sich der Reihe nach durch."

And here is the previous sentence for more context:

"Für diese sogenannten E-Kreise bringen alle Hauptabteilungsleiter ihre in der Entwicklung befindlichen Prototypen mit."

Thanks,

Gavin

From the little bit of information you are supplying, it sounds to me that automobile prototypes are being passed around among the top management possibly for evaluation and feedback purposes?

agree  Richard Stephen: I like 'swap' and I would just end it there without all the superfluous verbosity about 'unter sich der Reihe nach'

neutral  Michael Martin, MA: Passing around is correct. But that's not the same as swapping or exchanging. German austauschen is not as narrow and transactional as swapping and exchanging.

circulate among themselves

Explanation:
"There, senior personnel will circulate among themselves, one by one, the Cayennes, Macans, Boxters and Panameras."

The use of "durch" (compare with "durchreichen") rather than "aus" makes the term even more centered on the flow of activities rather than the transactional nature of swap and exchange.

take it in turns ... on a rota basis

Explanation:
Senior managers will take in turns to test out each of the models - Cayennes, Macans, Boxters, Panameras - on a rota basis.

I share Michaels' misgivings about swap, which implies permission being sought and given in a series of spontaneous and haphazard agreements. I don't see 'circulate among themselves,' as an answer, however, unless they are driving round a test track.

This next version is perhaps not the right register:
Here, the Cayennes, Macans, Boxters and Panameras will do the rounds among the senior managers.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Thought of "rotate" when seeing this (before you posted). "We rotate cars among deputies..." http://www.eagletimes.com/news/2016-01-05/Front_Page/Sheriff... // Maybe swapping spots would have ensured wider circulation.
