beneficial insect reservoir beds Explanation: My understanding is that these are areas designed with insects in mind. 10 weeks ago the farmers and beekeepers in Oberursel planted seeds in three areas of the town, supported by the farmers’ support group (Landwirtschaftlichen Förderverein). These areas, known as “Blühinseln” are now in full bloom, offering nourishment for bees, butterflies, and insects http://www.allthingsgerman.net/oberursel/2012/07/oberursel-i... Beneficial Insect Reservoir Beds (BIRB’s) are designated border areas—and “islands” within the vegetable beds—where insect diversity is encouraged. Attracting beneficial insects—and sustaining them—is their purpose, but they can be beautiful as well as functional. https://www.grow-it-organically.com/attracting-beneficial-in... |

wild flower meadow Explanation: "beneficial insect reservoir bed" sounds too technical to me and I believe that "Blühinsel" are created and managed for amenity and biodiversity generally, not only for the benefit of insects, though that is clearly important. They might be within a garden, but I think it would be misleading to describe them as "gardens" or "flower beds", because this implies that they are cultivated to produce flowers or vegetables, whereas they are managed (sowing seeds, mowing only once or twice a year) for amenity and biodiversity. They are more likely to be surrounded by a roundabout than by water, so "blooming island" won't do at all, unless you're trying to be funny. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2021-01-30 12:52:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Note in response to AndrewSzep (Asker): I think you're right that a "Blühinsel" is a small "Wildblumenwiese", so one could make this clear by specifying that it is a "small wild flower meadow". pollinator/pollination zone (space) Explanation: "Wild pollination has been in sharp decline in recent years and there is a movement to create “wild pollination zones” on the periphery of farms, said Dirk Philipp, associate professor of animal science for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture." https://talkbusiness.net/2017/09/wild-pollination-on-the-dec... "From a distance, a pollinator zone might look like a patch of weeds, but a closer inspection reveals a busy buffet with buzzing creatures flitting from bloom to bloom. Here’s what you need to know." https://wvstateparks.com/pollinator-zones-at-state-parks-are... "Researchers say even if a cotton field is not located adjacent to natural land cover, farmers can create pollinator zones by planting a row of wildflowers between rows of their crops or even on the edges of the crop field. In addition, farmers can introduce flowering crops into the crop rotation and reduce pesticide spraying, especially during daytime hours." https://www.farmprogress.com/cotton/study-shows-pollinators-... "We have also created several designated pollinator spaces like our curvaceous stone raised bed “pollinator island” in the backyard garden, the cobble-stone lined “pollinator zones” in the front yard garden, or the terraced corner from the front yard expansion project. Those spaces are loaded with the plants for pollinators you’ll find in the post. I did a tally, and discovered we are currently growing all but four of the plants on the list!" https://homesteadandchill.com/top-23-plants-for-pollinators/ |

island flower bed / flower bed. Explanation: Island flower bed seems to be the correct term, but if you don't want to use the word island with its surrounded-by-water connotation, you may be able to adjust the rest of the sentence (context) to make it clear that it is simply a flower bed! :-) or just say flower bed... see references... https://www.houzz.com/photos/island-flower-bed-ideas-phbr0lbl-bl~l_6861 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tSLSSJwDHE |
