Researching "health tax" reveals a different connotation for the US audience. This tax doesn't even exist yet in Germany!

is certainly what I'd call it - I cannot really see that a US audience could misundestand this; taxes are levies which none of us want to pay, and I can't see this being any different at all.

Doesn't it make you wish you were in politics and in a position to force our political leaders to stop stuffing THEIR pockets with OUR money????

Lauterbach: Gesundheitssteuer auf Tabak

Für eine Gesundheitssteuer auf Tabak hat sich der Gesundheitsexperte Karl Lauterbach ausgesprochen.
Hohe Tabakpreise seien "das Beste, was wir für die Gesundheit unserer Kinder tun können", sagte der Berater von Gesundheitsministerin Ulla Schmidt der "Neuen Presse".
Lauterbach plädierte auch für Bonus-Tarife bei den gesetzlichen Krankenkassen. Wenn leicht erkrankte Patienten "überflüssige Besuche bei Fachärzten" vermieden und das Vorbeugeverhalten bei Menschen mit beeinflussbaren Risikofaktoren für chronische Krankheiten gefördert würden, könne Geld gespart werden.

agree  RobinB: I'd stick with tax, and maybe put it in inverted commas. Two models are under discussion: a flat 3 percentage points increase in income tax, and a "health solidarity surcharge" of 8 percentage points on the tax liability. As David says, this is crazy.
