I suspect it may originally have been a brand name.

Not a "Tippfehler" as stated in the DB. It seems to be a proprietary name for a Busch-Jäger product. One is shown here:

neutral  Johannes Gleim: A RCD is no circuit breaker. // Upgraded as you indeed posted a picture of the "Steckmat" showing a portable RCD. Unfortunately the picture is only visible if you put the cursor on it. However, the term 'circuit breaker' is wrong, nevertheless.

-> What makes you think that this device is a 'switch'? The English verb/noun implies manual intervention. And what do you think your safety 'switch' is for if not to break the circuit?

agree  gb484: agree. here's another English version: https://www.screwfix.com/p/masterplug-rcd-adaptor/63731. Re: A RCD is no circuit breaker(sic). An RCD breaks the circuit in milliseconds on detecting leakage to earth and therefore is a circuit breaker.

disagree  Johannes Gleim: I would't call it "safety switch" (laymen's term). It's a portable RCD called "safety switch" by mistaken. That's why I posted a separate answer 1 day after your posting.

IEC 62355 INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
Circuit breakers - switched protective earth portable residual current devices for class I and battery powered vehicle applications
:
The SPE-PRCD consists of a plug, a residual current device (RCD) an a portable socket outlet.
:
In addition to the RCD function, the SPE-PRCDs address incorrect supply connections resulting in a hazardous live PE and/or supply failure (for example: loss of supply PE or loss of supply N). These SPE-RPCDs are intended for application only on TN and TT systems.

disagree  Lancashireman: 1) Incorrect word order and use quote marks in EN: “Safety switch” Steckmat > Steckmat safety switch; 2) No, it’s not a (user-operated) ‘switch’, though it does have a reset button; 3) Yes, it’s an RCD, but no mention of ‘portable’ in the source text.
