Context: Operating & service manual for a water-treatment system

Technical context: Water is treated with silver nitrate and then pumped from a holding tank before being combined with hydrochloric acid in order to lower its pH. When the pH drops, the silver nitrate precipitates out of solution. The silver nitrate is then caught by this fibrous "sorberwatte." You could potentially translate it as "...fibrous wadding" but does the "Sorber-" part refer to absorption, adsorption, or something else?

neutral  D. I. Verrelli: I like "sorptive wadding". If the material is 'catching' a precipitate, then it is neither adsorption nor absorption. But it may be that the wadding is *designed* for some sort of sorption, even though here used for filtration. "Wool" could confuse.
