Im LFI bezieht sich der Begriff vorwiegend auf den Schutz vor Naturgefahren."
The French translation given in this glossary is:forêt protectrice
Italian:bosco di protezione, the established English term: "protective forests"
I have translated quite a few texts on forestry, and "regeneration" is the buzzword here( especially after natural disasters like wild fires or, in this case, avalanches.)

Protective forest renovation

Explanation:
In Austria, about 20% of forest are described as "Schutzwald"; it protects people from avalanches, and wild animals from people. One of its present problems is that it's getting older all the time, and needs to be renovated gradually.

forestry management in avalanche-protection areas

Explanation:
Don't shoot me, I know that's a very loose translation, but it seems to be that a literal translation is unsatisfactory, particularly for English-speaking readers for whom protective forests doesn't immediately imply anything to do with avalanches - all depends who your target readers are, though
