I think I'd go for the direct translation. There are a no. of Google refs., and the text describes what is involved, so the reader would understand what is being described.

It has been shown that an 8 metres tallhedge can reduce windspeeds by60% even when leafless. A livingwoven hedge can provide a particu-larly robust screen.
