I agree that an adjective should be added, which also gives Diana some leeway in her translation - panoramic, scenic, historic, geological, etc.

There is a difference between Terroir F-Punkt and Aussichtspunkt - see my entry and quote from Alison's link below. It seems the Terroir-F-point so -to speak is the place itself that can be seen from a view(ing) point/vista point (Aussichtspunkt). But I still think that these view points are also special locales. ...

It's the locale from which one can have a great view. But it is also important what is seen from that point, i.e. the very special terroir features of the place - to me it's more than just a great view as evidenced in the conditions for it in Diana's first link, it's the place contained in the vista so-to-speak. See also Alison's example including the following statement: "Die Terroir F-Punkte sollen sogenannte magische Orte in Franken sein. An exponierten Aussichtspunkten sollen sie neben dem weiten Blick in die fränkische Landschaft auf besondere Weise die Vielschichtigkeit der Region zeigen." (zeigen = present) I am probably overcomplicating this but I am ready to admit something needs to be added to view or vista. But I prefer those two terms. So if it's vista point or view point, it's certainly okay.

Although the German word seems to imply a look-out point from which you look at the area, it's the place itself that's important here, that's why I rather see it as (splendid) view or panoramic view, which puts the emphasis more on what is seen IMO. Just meant as additional suggestions.

Diana. The true scope of the scenery can only be absorbed from a certain height. A 'lookout point' - which is used in US forestry and tourism - is always from above. Flatlands, for example the Painted Desert, are considered 'enchanting landscapes'.

I would say that this type of view is usually made possible by being slightly elevated, but I supposed in flat countryside one could have a nice view on the level, as it were. Certainly in Franconian wine-growing country all the vineyards are on sometimes quite steep slopes, and the Aussichtspunkte are on or near the top of these slopes.

Good to see you and hope you're well! Are you only dealing with higher groud, panoramas or somesuch? A view point must be elevated, I do believe. For other points of interest, I would use (logically) points of interest or sights. There is also scenic view and panorama.

Just have a look at the Scottisch highlands or Wales or ... and you will see that they use a lot "view point" not written in one word.
Aberystwyth from Constitution Hill in Ceredigion is a well visited view point overlooking Aberystwyth Town and the seaside.
The route takes you around the scenic Lochans and up to the view point with a chance to see wetland birds and otters on the way, and learn a bit about the geology of the area from the informative signs. Just two examples but if you google a bit you'll find plenty more ...

The images and descriptions on the franken-weinland link seem to indicate standard viewpoints, don't they? I.e. somewhere you can stand/sit and look out over an area and maybe read some information about it on a panel. Or am I missing something?
