Untersuchungsgefängnis des ministeriums für staattssicherheit remand prison of the East German Ministry of State Security Explanation: The Ministry for State Security, (German: Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, commonly known as the Stasi (IPA: [ˈʃtaziː]) (abbreviation German: Staatssicherheit, literally State Security), was the official state security service of East Germany. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi Impressions from a visit to the former GDR State Security Remand Prison at Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. The site is now a Memorial. The complex was used as the main remand prison by the former East German Ministry of State Security (MfS), or "Stasi" (short for Staatssicherheit) mostly for political prisoners. It was located inside a larger off-limits area that was not even shown on the street maps. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cbmd/sets/72157623133494483/ -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 22 mins (2010-01-29 14:21:01 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- A remand prison is also sometimes referred to as a pretrial prison. |
