I am trying to find the term "Schreibstubengefreiter" in English. It is from a text about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, so about the time of World War II.

"Allerdings wusste Eberhard Bethge, Schreibstubengefreiter bei einem Stab hinter der italienischen Front, damals noch nichts von dem Drama, das Bonhoeffer zu diesen vier Strophen veranlasst hatte."

(I was not really sure whether to rate this pro or non-pro, but since this is not for a professional translation, but for something I am doing as a favour for a friend, I hope rating it non-pro was the correct thing to do...)

"orderly room, office" is what my dt.-eng military dictionary suggests for "Schreibstube"

I was a Schreibstubengefreiter in the US army but I won't offer a translation because I don't know if you require British or American English.

A soldier working in a military Schreibstube is called a personnel clerk in the US army. Maybe: private working as a personnel clerk.
