Mitnahme

English translation: everything they took with them /their belongings

German term or phrase: Mitnahme
Effect of Nazi laws on a Jewish community, from a diary written in the 50s:

Durch Gesetz vom 26 April 1938 war alles bewegliche und unbewegliche Vermoegen der Juden anzumelden. Die Finanzaemter gaben die Auskunft, dass dies wegen der Mitnahme bei der Auswanderung fuer die Betreffenden sehr wichtig sei.

It could have to do with people 'taking along' their belongings - or might it mean some sort of tax to be paid before they leave?

Thank you.

-> are you sure? and if so why not :)? I would say you should think about it :) and I will give you the points if I get them ok? :)

agree  writeaway: in any case, it was just a ploy so people would let the Finanzamt know everything they owned to make it easier for the Finanzamt to confiscate it. A ready-made inventory for their convenience. /this deserves the sacred (now meaningless) pointZ.

Or rather "because of" instead of "for". Anyway, "Mitnahme" is just the fact that the people took along their belongings.

neutral  writeaway: is this really different from the first answer? don't understand the disagree since this is saying the same thing

-> well "mitnahme" is more the fact that you take along your belongings rather than the belongings themselves

agree  mill2: this is the meaning but you'll probably have to reword it so it sounds more natural

disagree  Lancashireman: With Mill. Your proposal ("the declaration was important because of taking along") needs to be reworded.
