German term or phrase: Lehrschrift
"Ich habe damals ((when I was in York)) schon viele *Lehrschriften* verfasst, die damals als ideales Lehrmittel galten."

This is a text written in the first person as if it were Alcuin speaking directly to us. I cannot find the word 'Lehrschrift' in any dictionary, but my research so far indicates two possible solutions:
- treastises
- didactic works
Any other ideas?

Or didactic writings, as above, but definitely not treatises, intended for specialists, whereas didactic writings are for students.

Thanks. I don't know why Helen Shiner (who I usually agree with) writes that the perfectly good word 'didactic' is 'to be avoided in English'

Explanation:
I guess you're not trying to write this in "old" English, but a word like 'tract' suggests something both older and religious (also relevant for Alcuin) or political. The links are a couple of things which come up when you google "instructive tract."

agree  Helen Shiner: Yes, I'd go with this. 'Didactic' is to be avoided in EN generally and 'treatise' is something much grander.

agree  Shivaun Conroy: I noticed in your second reference that instructive tract, didactic text and educational text are all used to describe the same work. Seems to be a q of personal preference.
