I see the issue here being that it was once one thing, and then (after 1808 for 150+ years) something a little different. How to differentiate then between Hoschmiede and Werkzeugschmied [für] Bauern? This is why I went with the word official, maybe better in quotation marks then, the "official" forge to Stift Pyhrn.

I can't find any German references the Spital ever being a monastery. It was given to lay brothers by Otto II in 1190 and later became a collegiate church. I get the feeling Hof is meant more in the sense of farm (because presumably the lay brothers would have required tools and had horses to work the land), but it doesn't seem to fit here. But whatever you choose, it will be an improvement on the translations available on the internet to date!

The English sites all retain the title Hofschmiede, which I would also do with a translation in parentheses. Official doesn't do it for me, as the blacksmiths were appointed or came into their title by the grace of their ability or influence. Hence, I would go with 'monastery forge or smithy'

Yes, the smithy rather than the smith. I don't know if I can correct my term suggestion but will attempt it.

Is this not the smithy as opposed to the smith himself here? i.e. blacksmith's workshop/forge rather than the blacksmith?
