German term or phrase: ueberliefert
Kircheninventare gehoeren zu den aeltesten und seit der Spaetantike am haeufigsten ueberlieferten Inventarformen. Dies lag sowohl am materiellen Reichtum der Kirchen als auch an der Schriftlichkeit des Klerus.

Ueberliefert is giving me trouble throughout this whole document. Passed down doesnt sound right to me. Available perhaps?

agree  Armorel Young: Yes, provided that you're very careful about what you do with "Dies lag", because it's not their survival that the Reichtum and Schriftlichkeit have ensured but their creation in the first place.

Explanation:
You can say that "Church inventories are one of the oldest and most frequently transmitted or forwarded to future generations forms of inventories".
The second variant says perhaps a bit too much as compared with the original text, but you'll know from the context if it applies or not...

neutral  Armorel Young: no, you can't say "forwarded to future generations forms of inventories" in English/"forwarding" simply isn't the right term here - we're not talking about forwarding an email.

-> Right. I rather meant "one of the forms of inventories most frequently forwarded to future generations".

neutral  Armorel Young: the context here isn't the passing on of (intangible) knowledge and information but the survival of tangible artefacts (inventories)

The definition of "überliefert" says nothing about the extent to which historical objects may have survived. The second Duden definition applies here and quite clearly refers to recorded information or knowledge that has been passed down. Whether anything survived at all is not the point here. The reference to “Schriftlichkeit des Klerus” points us in the right direction..

Again, the point of 'überliefert' is not to state how many artifacts have "survived'" but to indicate there are records available that prove their (prior) existence regardless of whether they're still around or not.

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: recorded quite clearly doesn't imply passed down, as überliefert does

-> As an isolated term, it doesn't. In context, it does. But ‘passed down’ is insufficient anyway, as it doesn’t make the need for a reliable written or physical record front and center the way 'überliefert' does.

agree  Stephanie Busch: The second Duden definition ("nachweisbar belegt") fits well, as "überliefert" is not used in isolation here, but together with "am häufigsten". How often can a type of inventory be handed down?

-> Thanks, Stephanie. Looks like there's a dire need for German native speakers to weigh in on this..!
