German term or phrase: Patenbetrieb
This term is clearly specific to the former GDR. I'm wondering whether it is something along the lines of a "sponsoring company", i.e. a company sponsoring the school (in this specific instance). No dictionary entries to be found, and I also searched the net.

Here's the context:

Grabower Küsschen waren die besten und wurden zum Schuljahresende vom
Patenbetrieb, einer Molkerei, gebracht.

Vielen Dank im Voraus!/Thank you very much in advance!

Explanation:
There doesn't seem to be a standardized English term for this, but this will certainly fill the bill.

agree  Kristina Cosumano (X): My ex-DDR-ler husband says it was mentoring rather than sponsorship; bringing Arbeitspraxis into the schools.

Typically, there is an induction ceremony in the school, Pioneer House or Palace, or sometimes on the premises of the "patron" organization, a factory or collective farm that has taken the detachment under its wing.
