German term or phrase: Sansarie
Nun wurde auch die Vermietung der Sansarie gestattet, wenn verdient Bürger das Amt wegen Alter oder Krankheit nicht mehr selbst ausüben konnten. Das Amt ging in dieser Zeit sogar an große Kuenstler, die es aber kaum persoenlich ausgeuebt haben duerfen.

This is a text about brokers in 16th century Venice. I would assume Sansarie is a post, likely the broker post, but I'm not sure if this is a German word/Italian word/English word....

Any ideas? Danke im Voraus!

I'm not sure why you have directed your enquiry exclusively to EdithK, but here is my contribution.
sansaria is the Venetian form of the Italian word sensaria. Wiktionary defines this as:
senseria f ‎(plural senserie)
1) agency (the activities of an agent)
2) remuneration, brokerage (paid to an agent)
You could therefore write
...sansaria (brokerage)...

I do not consider 'mediation' to be appropriate for your context as the modern sense of this word is more associated with marriage counselling.

Asker: I'm thinking I'll write "sansaria" and then the translation in parenthesis. Broker could also be used, correct?
