German to English translations [PRO] History / Historic term (?) from 1930
German term or phrase:"Schutzautomaten"
Does anyone have any idea what "Schutzautomaten" might be in context here (1930s, Hamburg)? My text is a short biography tribute to the first female doctor to obtain her postdoctoral qualifications in the field of medicine in Hamburg. Obviously Schutzautomaten are not something good based on the text, but I am coming up with nothing but my text itself in searches.
"1930 war sie Mitunterzeichnerin eines Briefes der Hamburger Ärzt*innen an die Hamburger Gesundheitsbehörde, in dem die Unterzeichnenden gegen die Aufstellung von sogenannten Schutzautomaten aus moralischen und ethischen Gründen protestierten"
I am guessing some kind of protective device or equipment?? But I am getting absolutely nothing on the web, which is odd.
Einwohner, gefolgt von Hamburg mit 75 Meldungen. Am wenigsten betroffen waren ... Geschlechtskrankheiten von cirka 1880 bis 1930. ...... Januar 1943 fragte der Schutzautomaten-Aufsteller Otto Manthey in seinem Schreiben an, ob es ihm... (This is a dead link, but it still appears on Google)

It's quite appropriate that the woman's name is Liebeschütz!

Thank you both so much! I wish I could split the points. I don't know how on earth you found those references, Phil, but great job! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Thanks for the laugh, guys and gals. I thought of many things a Schutzautomat might be or do, but dispensing condoms was not one of them! I don't know where you get your expertise (and quite frankly I am kind of scared to ask), but I do appreciate the help. ;-)
Imagine reading that in an obituary or on a gravestone: "Mr. XXX was killed on Christmas day while trying to blow up a condom machine. Instead of flowers mourners are asked to donate to the condom machine accident prevention fund."
After all, in the eyes of a German bureaucrat, a tree is not a Baum. It's what you call "raumübergreifendes Großgrün." And a traffic light is not an Ampel; that so unsophisticated. It is, of course, a "bedarfsgesteuerte Fußgängerfurt"! http://news.berlitz.de/beamtendeutsch-erklaert-5iq4tj0bz

Just want to see how vigilant you are. As to slot machine, the context is understood. You put your money in the slot. Vending machine is also an option. Let a girl have her foibles. By the way, I would think the 'sogenannten' refers to how the protesters referred to them and not the item itself. Enjoy your day, my friend.
And a dispenser doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay for the product.
Also, a Spielautomat is a slot machine, not a vending machine or a dispenser. It doesn't really make something either :P
And, yes, I do aim for precision, but in this context, I think both are fine. The links I posted lead to news articles and Rebecca's is a biography, not a technical document.
I'd rather like to know what people called them in the 1930s; else, you will have to remove "sogenannten" from the sentence in question.
Prophylactics dispenser (though AmE only)? A machine dispensing Fromms? Why are you making me look up such things in the morning :D
Best wishes

You can post as many links with 'machine' as you want, 'machine' simply isn't - of course, in my current mood - sufficient. I would think your incredible demand for precision with German would extend to English. It's Save My Language day.

In English, a machine makes something whereas a vending machine or dispenser is an Automat. Your Wiki link also says vending machine.
I'd rather be interested if there is some, say, florid way to describe the machine. As you can see below Schutzmittelautomat is a Verkaufsautomat für Kondome. In India, at least, they do seem to call this protective gear: https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/jharkhand/condoms-vani...
@Haigo and Ramey I don't see any problem using machine only.
Wiki: "A condom machine is a vending machine for the sale of condoms. Condom machines are often placed in public toilets, subway stations, railway stations and airports as a public health measure to promote safe sex." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condom_machine
Same story on NBC: "A man died after he was hit in the head by a flying piece of metal from a condom machine that he and two accomplices blew up in an apparent robbery attempt, police in Germany said Monday." https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/police-blast-debris-kills...
A description of a Schutzmittelautomat that has been auctioned off: "'Schutzmittel'-Automat, um 1935 Verkaufsautomat für Kondome, Einwurf 1 RM, Metallgehäuse 13 x 11 x 44 cm, Münzschacht unvollständig, mit Rückwand und Schlüssel. Zustand: (3/4)" https://lot-tissimo.com/de/i/3333534
There is more than one (female) doctor who signed that letter. Even though you are probably right about the name, you can find at least two of the women who signed it at geschichte.charite.de. Just add the middle part to the compound noun =)
I looked up your text online to see if the sentences before and after this offered any clues, but they're unrelated. The woman's name is Rahel Liebeschütz-Plaut. I've researched her a bit, but can't find any references to this episode.

Schutzautomat
condom machine
Explanation: Sorry these references are a bit fragmentary - they're all I've been able to find.

Or it could be "Schutzau tomatoes".
