In Germany this isdefinitely a disability status - 30 to 50% handicap. Perhaps you can use handicap status, if disability is too strong. But I wouldn't know if that's appropriate BE, which is why I agree with the Brit.

Thanks for all your input so far. I've researched this further and am wondering if 'debilitating conditions' might come into it - I have a feeling 'disability status' would be too strong here. A debilitating condition is not necessarily classed as a disability although it can stop you from leading your everyday life as you would like and consequently put you at a disadvantage when seeking employment. I forgot to mention that this word is intended as an alternative to Schwerbehindertenausweis

I don't agree that the description is easy to find. It gets only seven hits, and I didn't find any of them particularly helpful.
