It may be a cynical reading, but I would still incline to something like moneymaking (or possibly fundraising) schemes. This boy has it in him to be a top cleric one day! The wider context should show whether the author is sympathetic to the church as an organisation. Wie gesagt, however, I bow to the Sprachgefühl of the GNS.

Ich denke auch, dass Rachel goldrichtig liegt. Der Textausschnitt klingt für mich auch überhaupt nicht negativ (eher im Gegenteil - hier wird ein fleißiger Mann beschrieben, der hart arbeitet, um sich seine Ausbildung zu finanzieren).<br><br>Die Verwendung von „Griffe“ im Sinne von Gelegenheitsarbeiten war mir auf Anhieb überhaupt nicht vertraut und googelt sich auch nicht sehr gut (zu viele „handles“ im Weg), aber wenn man z.B. nach „Griffe im Haushalt“ googelt, dann finden sich schon einige Verwendungsbeispiele (z.B. aus dem Angebot einer Sozialstation: „Kleine Handreichungen und Griffe im Haushalt wie z.B. beim putzen, kochen, waschen, bügeln“).

Ich glaube, Rachel liegt hier eher richtig, mit der Vermutung, es geht um allerlei "odd jobs", die er bezahlt bekommt.

I suspect. "Got up to various tricks", "engaged in wheeler dealing". But I think this is one for the German native speakers to pronounce on. The author seems to hold Dechanten in low esteem.
