German term or phrase: verlässt sein Hungerloch
This is from a chapter on how Mucha became part of the group of artists around the Crèmerie run by Charlotte Caron. The whole text is in the historical present.

"Im Sommer 1890 verlässt Mucha sein Hungerloch in der Rue Joseph Bara und sucht Anschluss an andere Künstler."

I've currently got "meagre hole" for Hungerloch, but I'm not very happy with it. I'm wondering about "starving in a garret" as the artist is stereotyped to do, but don't know where he was actually living at the time.

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received!

Explanation:
I think this would get the general idea across without having to specify what kind of a hole of a place this actually was.

what amounted to hi s garret

Explanation:
This would convey the meaning and get around the fact you're not sure whether it was an actual garret.
