I know that you had not used it in your question (you merely said "people"), which is why I added the explanation below. It seemed to me as if the suggested translations were starting to break away from the source text.

Thanks everybody for your input. Can I just point out that I don't need an explanation of what it means? I am just looking for a way to get the meaning across. The crux is basically that there are very few labels/estates which are considered to be premier wines, which everybody wants, while there are plenty of other wines which are perfectly fine, yet nobody wants to buy them.

On a side note: Most answers seem to establish some kind of SVO structure with "Weinkenner" being the subject or object. The sentence cut into parts:
- Darbt die Weinwelt unter dem Joch der Etikettentrinker
- hängt der Geniessersegen so schief
- [hängt der] Weinkorb so hoch

All of these (basically) separate parts of the sentence refer to "Weinwelt."

In any case, Ian, I assume the dilemma ("Krux") is that certain wines are getting ever rarer and more expensive because they are the only ones people want. At least that's how I read it based on the context given.

However, that doesn't make much sense if you continue with: "darin liegt die Stärke der Region" How is that a strength?!? Is there by any chance a preceding sentence that would clear up what "dieser Krux" refers to?

Plus: I think we're getting close to overinterpretation here.

These "connoisseurs" seem to have little clue about what they're doing. They even judge the same bottle differently based on the color(!) of the wine. It's about prestige (Etikettentrinker), vague descriptors (to divulge their "expertise"; Geniessersegen schief), and price (Weinkorb so hoch).

Meant to edit that last post a bit more, trying to type on my phone! I quite like off track suggested by David first - no longer about true appreciation, just price/label. kind of an inverted case of sour grapes because here the cheaper wines are attainable but are looked down on by the so-called connoisseurs who don't really know how to appreciate wine except by price. Is that how others understand it?

Wow, that's a difficult one! I dont really understand what is meant by the Weinkorb bit - unattainable, too complicated, criteria for judging a wine so narrow that many good wines are not appreciated? For the first part maybe sth like: is/has the world of connoisseurship (gone) so off track/awry/(is sth so) amiss/so wrong/up in...(ie taken over by/suffering from those (wine snobs) who think price/brand name (label) = quality).
