German term or phrase: hängt der Geniessersegen so schief und der Weinkorb so hoch?
I have run out of creative juices in an article on Burgundy wine, which is plagued with plays on words and idioms. The main thrust in this part of the text is that people focus on the most expensive wines in the region rather than the more affordable ones. The author sees this as a problem.

Does anyone have an idea?

Has the mad dash for the best bottles ...

Explanation:
Has the mad dash for the best vintages on the highest shelves transformed connoisseurs into the proverbial bull in a china shop, knocking over crates and smashing bottles and turning the sector on its head with their senseless stampede?

That's my very free (and, admittedly, somewhat wordy) rendering of the German.

The play on words with Geniessersegen is clever and comes, of course, from the German axiom about a "Haussegen", i.e., people say that "der Haussegen hängt schief" when there had been a violent domestic dispute and the ubiquitous woodcut with the saying ("God bless this home" etc.) would end up hanging at an angle.

Haussegen hängt schief:
Umgangssprachlich; Der Haussegen war früher ein häufiges Requisit der Wohnung. Es handelte sich dabei um einen in Holz geschnitzten Segenswunsch, der meist über der Eingangstür hing. Durch einen handfesten Ehestreit konnte er wohl auch einmal in Schieflage geraten, was redensartlich aufgegriffen und symbolisch überhöht ist

You'll need to come up with some saying of your own that gives a nod to the world of adages and proverbs and reflects the tone and meaning of the article.

The violence and destruction of the bull in the china shop might be one place to start.

Hope that helps.

correction: "people WOULD say ... " (most contemporary German homes no longer have a "Haussegen" having over the entrance). But the saying "Der Haussegen hängt schief" appears to be alive and well.

Another alternative would be simply NOT to translate this bit, especially if the message in this play on words has already been hammered home a zillion times in the article, which, as you said, is filled with plays on words and idioms. Sometimes the most elegant solution is "when in doubt, leave it out." ;-)

Asker: Thanks for your help. I could certainly do something with your suggestion. If I miss out the unnecessary bits in this text, though, I'd be left with about half the article and the client wants the English version to roughly equal the German in length.

Has the enjoyment of wine become the domain...

Explanation:
Has the enjoyment of wine become the domain of an elite oblivious of the gregarious pleasure to be had from a hearty bottle?

My try, for what it's worth.

Do aficionados hang their noses too high to see the low-hanging fruit (grapes)?

Explanation:
Couple of other ideas:

Are aficionados as misguided as low-hanging grapes are unpopular?

Are aficionados as misguided as (low-hanging) grapes are plentiful?

I am toying with the concept of "low-hanging fruit" which normally stands for easy pickings or something that can be accomplished easily. In my solution, it also stands for the diversity of less expensive but more available grapes ignored by the wine snobs

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 21 hrs (2016-09-03 05:30:49 GMT)

I am changing my mind on this.
See new translation below, followed by an explanation:

"Is the wine sphere shackled to the dictates of label-conscious drinkers? Has drinking enjoyment turned into sour grapes as prices have soared?"

The sentence at hand plays around with two German idioms: Haussegen hängt schief + Der Korb hängt hoch (see links below). I don’t think Geniessersegen is aimed only at wine snobs but at all those who enjoy wine. After all, there has to be more than one party to keep the domestic peace (Haussegen) much like you can’t have conflict (schiefer Haussegen) without at least two parties being involved. As for ‘Der Korb hängt hoch’ , this suggests the basket has been placed out of reach to avoid having to replenish its contents since the household cannot afford it. In this case, it’s some of the wines that have become unaffordable, forcing people to save up money due to soaring prices.

agree  Eleanore Strauss: Connoisseurs is a better term in this context... aficionado is generally not associated with wine and similar delights. Could use simpler phrasing, ending with..to see what's right in front of them.

Reference information:
Are the connoisseurs simply too biased? Working with bliss in this context is a little difficult even the German "hinkt" it's from "hängt der Haussegen schief" by the way ... or the other way to put it would be "Are connoisseurs just short of bliss? but, frankly, I like the first better ...
The next part comes in my opinion from "Hängen die Trauben zu hoch" but the translation sounds also quite strange ...

From the context I'd say the other part could mean the following (but not 100% sure): Do all want to belong to this small elitist crowd - ignoring the marvellous things right under their noses?

Asker: Thanks for your input. The text is Swiss German and self-indulgent in my opinion. The author plays with idioms throughout the text, so don't worry about the "Weinkorb" :-)

Asker: Yes, that's the general gist of the whole section in the article.
