German term or phrase: Aus-sich-heraus-Schöpfen
This phrase comes up several times in a book on how to enhance creativity.

Context:
In a definition of catharsis:
Die Katharsis Spontanes und unbewusstes ** “Aus-sich-heraus-Schöpfen” ** ohne Recherche, Unterbewusstes wird zu Tage gefördert, diese Methode wird oft bei der Kunst-therapie verwendet.

Katharsis (griech. kätharsis = Reinigung, im Sinne von spontanem Aus-sich-heraus-Schöpfen)

Kreativen Menschen schöpfen aus sich selbst heraus....

I am assuming Schöpfen is being used here as 'creation.' Does anyone have an elegant translation for this phrase? 'Creation through purging' comes to
mind, but I would really appreciate any better suggestions.

Many thanks,

Mary

I added 'drawing from within,' but this essentially is best for the text. Many thanks.

agree  Stephen Reader: Yes, given the explanation ('Unterbewusstes wird..') that follows - think n.b. to have the 'getting it out there' explicit.

producing art by drawing on one’s own experiences / inner world

Explanation:
You could also use ‘to create’ or ‘be creative’ instead of ‘producing art’. You know what has come before, the types of things being suggested, so I hope you can find something suitable to match.

draw strength from within

Explanation:
I agree that create is one definition of "Schöpfen", but I would use "draw" here resulting in the familiar English phrase, "strength from within", especially since the first definition in linguee is "draw" - see reference.

neutral  Stephen Reader: In the presumed aim of the exercise, yes, but the focus in the orig. phrase seems to be on externalising subconsc. matter as a way toward that result. You c'd even just omit 'strength'.

unbewusstes Aus-sich-heraus-Schöpfen; Kreative Menschen schöpfen aus sich selbst heraus
unconscious drawing of inspiration from one's own depths; .. plumb their own depths for inspiration

Explanation:
It#s a coincidence that catharsis is being referred to on this site used by some prople as a surrogate and substitute for psychotherapy.

Anyway this is two interlinked questions as a translation of the first occurrence of unbewusstes “Aus-sich-heraus-Schöpfen” may not be usable for the next one of Kreative Menschen schöpfen aus sich selbst heraus....

Example sentence(s):
  • To confront a person with their own shadow is to show them their own ... we must plumb the depths of our own psyches including the deep
