Halten wir also fest: „Schee“ ist „schön“ und wird in zahlreichen Dialekten nördlich und südlich des Mains als „schee“ oder ähnlich ausgesprochen.<br><br>Da der Spruch „Weil's schee macht“ aber nun mal durch die Werbung einer bayerischen Schauspielerin für die Buttermilch eines bayerischen (schwäbischen) Herstellers zum geflügelten Wort wurde, wird der Ausdruck aber weithin als „bayerisch“ angesehen. Was aber eigentlich überhaupt keine Rolle spielt.<br><br>Und wenn im Ausgangstext nun steht „Tja, wie sagt der Bayer: 'Wenn's schee macht'“, dann ist das ja auch richtig. Das sagt der Bayer so. Unabhängig davon, ob das auch der Sachse oder der Pfälzer so sagt.

I think "schee" is more of a Franconian (fraenkisch) term than a Bavarian term. Of course, Franconia is in Bavaria - but they're kind of their own breed, and the dialect is definitely different from the Bavarian of, say, the Munich region. My mom, aunt and grandmother live in the heart of Franconia, in Nuremberg, and "Wenn's schee macht" or "Ach schee!" are common words out of their mouths.

Auch in Bayern aufgewachsen. "Schee" ist nicht besonders bayrisch, bestenfalls eine Art für Bayern, das Wort "schön" ihrer Sprache anzupassen ("dankschee!"), wenn sie nicht lieber doch "schön" sagen (etwa in "sehr schön!"). Allenfalls die Aussprache von "macht" könnte helfen, daß das Ganze bayrisch wirkt.

I grew up in the States and have to watch Bavarian films with German subtitles to catch the entire meaning and humor (Wer Früher Stirbt ist Länger Tot - excellent film!). But in our Central German boondocks dialect "schee" is very common and one of the words in my limited vocabulary that I understand, meaning "lovely, cute, wonderful, delightful, comely, etc." Depending on context, it could also mean "whatever turns you on"

Because of the "schee", which is not restricted to Bavaria solely. You will hear that line wayyyy North of Frankfurt, in Eastern Germany and whatnot. It is NOT specifically Bavarian.

I did not grow up in Bavaria, I'm from the Ruhrgebiet, but I have an inkling that I had heard the phrase prior to the commercial. but the clip definitely made it a catchphrase nationwide.

It is most definitely Bavarian, Nicole, and it simply means, as Manuela says, if it makes you beautiful. Trust me; Bavarian is my second language. And it is an advertising slogan, as Melanie pointed out. The cleaning lady of that ad even acquired a certain measure of fame in Southern Germany (seems like she passed away recently).

Technically, it means: "Whatever benefits you", "As you like it", "Whatever makes you feel really good". It is kind of a disparaging remark, in the sense of: "Do whatever moronic thing you feel you have to do, if you are convinced that this crap makes you feel and look super-duper beautiful."
