German term or phrase: arbeitsrechtlichen Näheverhältnis
Der Kontrolleur stand im Lager aufgrund eines arbeitsrechtlichen Näheverhältnis.
The text is about someone being caught without a valid ticket on a bus. I guess the ticket inspector was not actually on the bus but in the bus depot - I cant' see what else the "Lager" would be? Stood in the bus depot due to a proximity relationship under labour law? Sounds odd. Any suggestions please

by virtue of a close link/age with his employment
Explanation:
perchance. more legalistically and long-winded for Plain Legal English campaigners: by dint of a proximate relationship in employment (AE: labor law) terms.

This may make it clearer that the ticket inspector is still 'acting in the course of his employment'.

The ticket inspector's job took him to the bus depot where he may not have been actually employed, rather - as a matter of routine - by the bus company.

Not really a proximate labo/u/r law 'interest' here, as in the first weblink.

- cut to Paddington Railway Station ticket inspectors 'still on duty' (im arbeitsrechtlichen Näheverhältnis?) at a pub opposite, claimed to be on British Rail land, and threatening to arrest drinkers 'without being in possession of a valid railway or platform ticket .'

Example sentence(s):
  • When a plaintiff can point to this sort of “very close” temporal proximity, the court is more likely to find that proximity alone is sufficient to show a causal link between whistleblowing and retaliation.

in the course of his/her duty

Explanation:
A glorified legalistic term for, "...the inspector, as authorised by his/her duties, happened to be in this location at the time..."

Some other simplified solutions stressing somewhat the legal entitlement aspect:
as authorised by....duties
as entitled under...duties
in conformity with...duties

and so on...

agree  philgoddard: Yes, I think this is the idea, though I'd say duties in the plural. And she had a sex change!

neutral  Michael Martin, MA: Worth a thought. But then again, wouldn't it have been easier to use 'in Ausübung ihrer Pflichten" or sth. similar in German?

proximity of her official function

Explanation:
The ticket collector was at the depot due to the proximity of her official function
Or:
The proximity of her official function placed the ticket collector at the depot

There must be a reason other than pompousness for invoking the concept of proximity (p. 153, "Aus diesen Ausführungen ergeben sich somit folgende zwei Merkmale einer special relationship: proximity (Näheverhältnis) und reasonable reliance (Vertrauen" https://books.google.com/books?id=FD1dAwAAQBAJ&pg=PP1&dq=Der...

Im Lager stehen--> „Lagertheorie“

https://www.lecturio.de/magazin/diebstahl-betrug/
