German term or phrase: Lautkörper
From a book on 20th-century theories of language.

Lautkörper is usually the German equivalent of symbol or signifier, but here the emphasis is evidently on the sound of the spoken word. Sound image is a possibility, but I am unsure. Grateful for your learned suggestions!

body of sound
Explanation:
I'd just go for the direct translation here.

Only in this body of sound (the voice) can words, with their fleeting samples of 'sound material', actually be interpreted as 'pure meaning' and self-expression.

aural signifier (identifier)

Explanation:
maybe:

aural body (more literal)
aural entity
aural quality

Lautkörper - the aural quality/identifier/signifier, the way a word is sounded out/voiced/does not (necessarily) have to depend on its meaning.
