  -> Ah ok, the Duden doesn't make this differentiation ("Werk|stu|dent, der: Student, der sich neben seinem Studium od. in den Semesterferien durch Lohnarbeit Geld verdient."). So how would you translate it then, aside from doing a footnote/ gloss?

They get a job, related to the course of study if available, to help defray the costs of education here.

Bedeutung von "Werkstudent" der Hinweis, daß es sich heute meist um eine Verknüpfung inhaltlicher und organisatorischer Art auf vertraglicher Basis handelt, die Nutzen für AG und AN/Student bietet. Der Student hat einen Fuß in der Tür und bekommt Geld, das Unternehmen derzeit eine günstige Facharbeitskraft und Aussicht auf später qualifizierten Mitarbeiter. Dieser Sachverhalt ist klar von Studenten, die während des Studium jobben, zu unterscheiden, schon wegen der beides umfassenden Vertragsgrundlage. Selbst im Wikipedia-Artikel steht etwas dazu, siehe aber auch die Stellenanzeige.
