I'm translating the book AI in Marketing, Sales and Service by Peter Gentsch.

Originally, this book was written in German (Künstliche Intelligenz für Sales, Marketing und Service: Mit AI und Bots zu einem Algorithmic Business) so I'm dealing with the English translation of the German original. And sometimes the English translaion seems rather strange to me and to native English speakers as well.

This is the German original:

Collaboration Bots hingegen unterstützen Engagement Teams bei ihrer Arbeit, indem sie mögliche Antworten oder Routing-Optionen vorschlagen, Recherche-Aufgaben in Wissensdatenbanken übernehmen oder Vorgänge kategorisieren und dynamisch priorisieren.

Der Social-Media-Management-Anbieter BIG Social Media differenziert in seiner Lösung BIG CONNECT die Bot-Varianten noch weiter nach konkreten Anwendungsszenarien und stellt passend eine Bibliothek konfigurierbarer Bots bereit (vgl. Abb. 7.14). Sowohl Chatbots als auch Collaboration Bots bieten insbesondere in Marketing und Service zahlreiche Vorteile, da sie 1:1-Kommunikation profitabel ermöglichen, ***wo das bisher nur in Ausnahmefällen gegeben war***. Auf diese Weise werden gänzlich neue Services möglich.

This is the English traslation:

Collaboration bots, on the other hand, support engagement teams in their work by proposing possible answers or routing options, taking over research tasks in knowledge databases or categorising activities and prioritis- ing them dynamically.

The social media management provider BIG Social Media in its BIG CONNECT solution differentiates types of bots even further according to concrete application scenarios and makes available a suitable library of con- figurable bots (cf. Fig. 5.13).

Both chatbots and collaboration bots provide numerous advantages especially in marketing and service as they make 1:1 communication profitable ***where it was only given in exceptional cases in the past***. In this way, entirely new services are becoming possible.

I'm not sure what is implied in "where it was only given in exceptional cases in the past."

Does it imply that one to one communication between companies and customers was profitable only in exceptional cases? This sounds strange to me because it implies that people in Customer Service were worse than bots.

Or does it imply that one to one communication between companies and customers took place/happened only in exceptional cases? But what about people who worked and still work in Support/Customer Service departments? They did communicate with customers.

So what is the intended meaning of the German original?

I'm sure there is a more elegant way to put it, but that is the gist! It does make sense - bots are much cheaper than customer service staff, so by using bots instead, the company's profitability is boosted.

The English translation of the book evidently has some room for improvement, shall we say!
