German term or phrase: Eingesehen bis in das ...
All,

I am translating a doctor's letter by a specialist for Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology on a colonoscopy on 20 y.o. female patient.

In the section "Befund", it reads:

Eingesehen wurde bis in das terminale Ileum.

Would this be correctly translated as "Hindgut and midgut were reviewed to the terminal ileum."?

Sourc text is from Germany. Target is international English.

Thank you.

Examination up to and including the terminal ileum
Explanation:
einsehen (prüfen) = to examine

Colonoscopy is a common procedure that allows examination of the inner surface of the colon (large intestine) by means of a colonoscope. In general, the whole colon can be examined, up to and including the caecum and often even to the ileum (at the end of the small intestine.

I would not use "hindgut" and "midgut".

colonoscopy - an examination of the rectum, colon and last part of the small intestine (terminal ileum) using a narrow tube with a camera in its tip, sometimes called a colonoscope, which is inserted through the anus.

Scope was advanced up to...

Explanation:
The procedure actually consists of advancing the scope as far as possible (ideally just beyond the ileocecal valve), with a focus on navigating safely through the bends and flexures of the "flabby" colon; followed by slow withdrawal of the scope with a focus on inspecting the whole circumference of all colonic portions which are passed on the way back to the anal orifice.

Although the German term is "sehen", the relevant information is actually how far up the scope could be advanced during the initial phase of the procedure. Following a typical English colonoscopy report format, you may therefore choose to say "The scope was advanced..." and leave the inspection/visualization part for the subsequent withdrawal phase.
