German term or phrase: nichtoptisch
"Kongorot-Färbung: Nicht- und polarisationsoptisch negativ."

What is this actually saying? The result of the congo red stain test was "non-optically" and polarisation optically negative? How would we say this in English, and where does the "nicht" fit in?

It's also true that the light source could be switchable, but the author is really saying "while (optically) viewed through a microscope"...

"Unrivalled precision optics with the HEINE DELTA20 T The DELTA20 T combines precision optics with the option to toggle between polarised and non-polarised illumination (toggle function)."

nichtoptisch standing alone would be "photo-optical", if that's any help...?

Whoops, that should read "lichtoptisch standing alone", of course...

Conversely, we could also say, "Negative, under standard (or normal) and polarised light", in the case where the light source itself is being altered for viewing.
