Assuming this is going on in a lab, I would translate as above, i.e. "32000 vials were emptied and discarded by the laboratory technicians..." or staff it that is more appropriate. |

In the gea-ps reference below, a vial loading machine is shown which is in contact with a "processing area" on one side and a "clean room area" on the other. In the second reference (kem.de), they refer to a "Technikbereich" versus "Produktionsbereich" and accordingly a "Technikseite" versus "Reinraumseite" of their machine.
