Automated Differential Count: A CBCD in which the WBC differential count is determined by the automated analyzer without manual review of a film.

A CBC must be ordered to perform a differential. Hematology instruments are automated differential screening instruments that identify WBC's by their size and staining activity. It performs a complete cell identification that includes neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils, eosinophils and immature granulocytes. The automated instruments count 32,000 white blood cells and statistically provide a more accurate differential count than a manual differential. All differentials will be analyzed on the instrument first. If the results fail the screening criteria, a manual differential will be performed. Pathologist approval is required to perform a manual differential on a specimen with an automated differential that passed the screening criteria.

External quality control requires spot-check measurements of one sample pair per analyte several times a year. It also involves an assessment of the measuring techniques employed by the laboratory and a comparison with other measuring techniques commonly used for the parameters in question as well as with the results of numerous other laboratories participating in the quality control program (inter-laboratory test-ing). Participation in such programs is not mandatory in all countries.
