Medical - Medical: Pharmaceuticals / nanofiltration
German term or phrase: Filtration erfolgt „durch die Wand“
Filtration erfolgt „durch die Wand“ und ist in der Herstellvorschrift xxx definiert

This is from a risk associated with nanofiltration in a risk analyses for a pharmaceutical product. The risk described is recontamination and the above is one of the risk mitigation measures.

Apparently the room where filtration takes place is separated into pre and post filtration zones (with separate airflows). The way I understand it is that the filtration system sits literally in the wall which devides the two zones. Can I translate this literally, i.e. “through the wall” in quotation marks as in the German, or does anyone know a particular technical term for this?

The filtration is carried out "through the wall" [(from one zone to the other)]
Explanation:
Alternative: The filtration is carried out "through the wall" [(from one side to the other)]
Alternative 2: The filtration is carried out "through a wall" [(from one zone to the other)]
(The point is that the translator already has enough information to explain to the reader what the cryptic phrase "through the wall" actually means.)
