English translation: measuring equipment vs. measuring device/instrument

And then: "Messgeräte dienen zur Bestimmung physikalischer Größen. Meistens führen sie im Rahmen einer Messung mittels einer Skalen- oder Ziffernanzeige auf eine quantitative Aussage über die zu messende Größe. Diese Aussage, der Messwert, wird als Produkt von Zahlenwert und Einheit angegeben. (Beisp.: Glasthermometer).
The background here is that in a previous version of this translation only "Messmitel was referred to, which the then translator called "measuring instruments". Now I have to enter changes, so must differentiate between the two.
"measuring system" is already taken for Messeinrichtung, which is presented as yet another category.

neutral  philgoddard: I don't think equipment works in this sentence, because it includes things like standards and reference material.

-> True, I've somehow missed the reference materials. What's your opinion on the literal "means (of measurement"?

agree  phillee: I think 'equipment' includes the 'resources' by implication and is a more common and recognisable term.

measuring resource

Explanation:
Here's one possibility - you could call it a measuring resource the first time, and a resource after than to avoid repetition (of which there is a lot, especially in the first sentence).

measuring aid

Explanation:
Because, after all, even a Meßgerät is only an aid in the measuring process, as you clearly state (Meistens führen sie ... auf eine quantitative Aussage).

neutral  Steffen Walter: Problem is that "Hilfsmittel" is mentioned as one of the sub-categories in the sentence (you can't define a term by itself).

While Phil's "resources" is an excellent idea, your text appears to be based very closely on terminology and definitions from DIN and ISO standards and it may therefore be best to try and adhere to those.

Compare the wording of ISO 9000, the only real difference being the reference to "software".
While measuring equipment is defined in ISO 9000 clause 3.10.4 as ‘measuring instrument, software, measurement standard, reference material or auxiliary apparatus or combination thereof necessary to realize a measurement process’, the standard only requires ‘measuring equipment’ to be calibrated when it is used for measuring purposes ‘to provide evidence of conformity of product to determined requirements’ either by product or process measurements.
