Tech/Engineering - Paper / Paper Manufacturing / Sleeve Change Calender

Talking about a sleeve change calender used with printing and embossing machines (or something like that). I know Ballen normally means bale, but that doesn't make any sense to me here. How does an expanding core shaft (which I have tentatively worked out "expandierender Basiskern" to be) have a bale? Or does it actually mean "balls"? But why is the verb associated with it singular and not plural in that case? TIA for your help in clearing this up.

If you want to mention it at all. The Ballen stuff can be found just once - at least in this context.

Looking at some pictures and based on your comments and thefastshow's, I think I'm going to call it a cylinder. What an extremely odd choice of word on the part of the article author though. As this is not really a normal translation for Ballen, I'm not going to enter it in the glossary, but I'm confident enough about "cylinder" in this context to use it and give it 4 points. So many thanks Bernd and thefastshow - appreciate your assistance.

bolt

Explanation:
bolt is used for 'Ballen' when talking about fabrics ('fabrics by the bolt') and would seem to suit here.
