places of self-created freedem Explanation: As the text concerns people in everyday situations in the DDR the "Freiräume" is probably best translated as "freedom" - the freedom the people have created for themselves in an environment with little freedom. Hope this helps. |

a bit of elbow room/claimed space/territory Explanation: I suggest this - elbow room is always created by oneself. the second suggestion is another option (duh) |

spaces/corners/islands of private freedom Explanation: Several hits for the above on the Web in connection with the GDR. I'm not convinced by the 'self-created' option, as freedom is not capable of creating itself. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 56 mins (2013-09-09 09:38:16 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Re-Imaging the Niche: Visual Reconstructions of Private Spaces in the GDR http://afterthewall.bangor.ac.uk/conference.php |

(where people have) carved out spaces of autonomy for themselves Explanation: It might sound more natural here to express this concept verbally. "...humorously render the locations depicted as places where people have carved out spaces of autonomy for themselves." (or autonomous spaces) "Spaces of autonomy" is often used in the context of social change or calls for political action. It should still work well in this context, too, since the definition of autonomy relates to freedom from external control or influence (with or without political agenda) which is essentially what the German term suggests, in my opinion. See example below: |

places where people have reclaimed some private space Explanation: I would unpack it a bit and slightly reword the sentence. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2013-09-09 10:47:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- or if you want a snappy title for the series of images, how about something like 'private space reclaimed'. Or if 'freedom' needs to be there, 'a place of freedom reclaimed'? |
