German term or phrase: innere Distanz
The meaning is clear, but is "inner distance" an appropriate English technical term? I find few examples of it on the web, but am not sure what term is used instead. Emotional withdrawal perhaps?

Thanks to all. I think "detachment" may sound best. (Others proposed this in later answers, but it is offered here for the first time.)

Explanation:
I've just come across an article about Max Weber in which the concept of "inner distance" is explained. Apparently it refers to how Max Weber conceived of humans and their personality. I guess that it is a common term used in psychology and sociology.

Please see the link for a detailed explaination.

emotional detachment

Explanation:
from wikipedia: "Emotional detachment, in psychology, can mean two different things. In the first meaning, it refers to an inability to connect with others emotionally, as well as a means of dealing with anxiety by preventing certain situations that trigger it; it is often described as "emotional numbing" or dissociation, Depersonalization or in its chronic form Depersonalization disorder. ****In the second sense, it is a type of mental assertiveness that allows people to maintain their boundaries and psychic integrity when faced with the emotional demands of another person or group of persons.**** These senses are within the framework of psychology and academia, not those of everyone else in the world."
