It's the XXY therapy as developed/practiced by Herr Soundso, i.e. the method.

Of course, sometimes it means 'according to'. But not here.

Thanks--although I'm not sure how you can tell, since, as you point out, "according to" is very common. I'd be interested to know how you would say it the other way: "According to Herr S-und-S these approaches are useful."

Asker: Yes, XXX is Herr Soundso.

Asker: Thanks for the elaboration. Actually, I realize that if translated literally into English, word for word, the first (method) version could be made into the second (acc. to) version by the simple addition of a comma: "... , according to so-and-so." I don't know whether that applies to German also, as I am not very cognizant of the differences in punctuation between the two languages.
